Sagicor Foundation gifts children, teachers during education week

Kingston, Jamaica – Sagicor Foundation, the charitable arm of Sagicor Group Jamaica, brought smiles to several educators, students, and wards of the state in the first week of child month, as it made a series of hand overs to various schools and children’s homes. This week was recognised as education week.
The Foundation began the month by contributing grocery and personal care items toward a treat for the City of Refuge Children’s Home in Content Gap, St Andrew. The treat was organised by the Xenacious Foundation and held on May 1. Sagicor also donated 14 new mattresses to the Mustard Seed Matthew 25: 40 Home for boys living with HIV/AIDS, through the Lions Club in Jamaica.
On Read Across Jamaica Day, the Sagicor Foundation contributed story books, notebooks and a new whiteboard to grade three students the Crescent Primary School in St Catherine. Representatives from Sagicor also read and interacted with the students.
Baskets were gifted to the dedicated teachers at the Kingsway High School in Kingston and York Town Primary School in Clarendon on Teacher’s day, which was celebrated on May 4. Sagicor also partnered with ‘Boss Mom’ Michelle Gordon and Food for the Poor to construct a new home for four children, their mother and grandmother, in St Elizabeth, ahead of Mother’s Day.
Michelle-Ann Letman, Manager, Public Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility, Sagicor Group Jamaica, noted that Child Month is of particular importance to the Sagicor Foundation, as children’s development is a key area of focus in the group’s philanthropic efforts.
“At the Sagicor Foundation, we’re always looking for new ways to support our children and those who care for them, and Child Month is one of the periods on the calendar that are dedicated to them,” she remarked. “We used this as an opportunity to spend time and help shape the lives of the children in our communities, an reaffirm our commitment to their wellbeing.”
The handovers came on the heels of the Sagicor Foundation’s Adopt-A-School health tour, where students from three early childhood institutions across the island benefitted from free health checks on Sagicor’s mobile wellness unit.
The health tour, held recently, saw students at the schools under Sagicor’s Adopt-A-School Programme – John Anglin Basic School in Warsop, Trelawny, Bermaddy Basic School in Linstead, St Catherine, and Charles Town Basic School in Charles Town, Portland – having their vision, hearing and oxygen saturation levels screened.
Sagicor plans to continue its Child Month celebration by contributing to additional community-based charitable initiatives throughout May, culminating with an event to honour the students and staff at its adopted schools towards the end of the month.
