SAGICOR Foundation Jamaica is set to launch the 25th anniversary of its annual charity road race, the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, on Tuesday, December 6 when the beneficiaries, patrons and fund-raising target will be announced.
Dubbed the Legacy Run in honour of its silver anniversary milestone, the highest fund-raising target to date is expected to be announced.
"Twenty-five years is a tremendous achievement and the entire team is excited for Sigma Run next year. Over the past two decades the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run has cemented itself as a must-attend event which is supported by corporate Jamaica and individuals coming together for a common cause — and that is to give back to our nation, Jamaica," said Christopher Zacca, president and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica.
The event, which started in 1999 in downtown Kingston, has grown significantly over the years from just over 300 participants at the inaugural run to having more than 27,000 participants in 2018.
"With the support from companies, individuals, and donors we have been able to raise over half a billion dollars for numerous institutions over the years, and in 2023 we want to continue to cement the legacy that is Sigma Run by raising the highest funds to date for our beneficiaries," expressed Zacca.
For the past two years (in February 2021 and February 2022), during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Sigma Run held scaled-down events to commemorate the charity event with virtual runs.
In 2021 the Sigma Run raised more than $49 million for the Port Antonio and Annotto Bay Hospitals, and this year (2022) the event raised $52 million for the Kingston Public Hospital.
Over the years the Sigma Run has had the distinguished patronage of outstanding Jamaicans such as Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tarrus Riley, Briana Williams, Stacey McKenzie, and most recently Hansle Parchment and Megan Tapper.
"We are grateful for all the people who have lent their image, voice and talent to the cause and have garnered support for the run over the years, and we are looking forward to having a successful staging come February 12, 2023 as we continue to live up to our vision to be a great company committed to improving the lives of the people in the communities in which we operate."
