Record-breaking Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run

Jamaica Observer February 17, 2019

The event will commence at 7:30 am, and as such the thoroughfares will be closed from 6:00 am.

This year's run has a target of raising $52 million for three beneficiaries, and it has surpassed its 2019 target of 25,000 participants as well as last year's record 26,519 registrants.

This year's beneficiaries are the Lupus Foundation of Jamaica, Diabetes Association of Jamaica, and May Pen Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“The Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run is such an inspirational and positive event, which is held annually all for meaningful causes,” a company release quotes Alysia White, assistant vice-president, group marketing for Sagicor Group Jamaica and Sigma Run Team Lead.

She said the team was pleased that Jamaicans continue to support the run and see it fit to partner with Sagicor Foundation every year in a bid to change lives and make a difference to Jamaica.

White also thanked registrants from corporate Jamaica as well as individual Sigma Run supporters for their commitment to the cause.

The Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run is the largest road race in the Caribbean and has raised more than $350 million in donations for over 30 beneficiaries since inception in 1999. Last year the run donated the $50 million raised to Spanish Town Hospital's Neonatal Unit and St Christopher's School for the Deaf.

Sagicor Foundation's Chairman R Danny Williams pointed out that after seeing the value of these entities and the communities they serve, Sagicor felt compelled to take them under its wings.

“These are all causes near and dear to us at Sagicor, and we know that the benefit to these organisations will be tremendous with so many lives being positively impacted.

“We realise that there are several challenges facing our country's healthcare sector, and we thank those who dedicate their lives to taking care of those in our society who have critical and chronic health concerns. We know we can't fill all the gaps, but we will continue to give our support in the ways we can,” Williams declared.

Meanwhile, nearby roads will be closed today to facilitate the event. And in addition to the closure of the roads, there will be no parking along Knutsford Boulevard from 4:00 am to 9:00 am.

The police say that section of the road will also be closed to vehicular traffic; however, hotel workers and guests will be allowed access from Oxford Road.
