Sagicor volunteers clean Welcome Bay

As small island states, Caribbean nations understand the value of conserving and protecting the region’s main tourist attraction—our beaches. This is why regional financial services entity Sagicor launched its coastal clean-up initiative, The Sagicor Blue Project, for a second year. In Trinidad and Tobago, team members engaged in a beach clean-up exercise at Welcome Bay/Hart’s Cut, alongside The Anchorage, on Saturday, June 24.
The clean-up collected over 40 bags of garbage, totalling 1,397 pounds, with the disposal managed by the Chaguaramas Development Authority. It was supported by team members from across the Sagicor footprint, including Sagicor Life Insurance Trinidad & Tobago Limited, Sagicor General Insurance Trinidad & Tobago Limited (SGI) and Sagicor Investments Trinidad and Tobago Limited. The Blue Project is part of a wider, regional beach clean-up exercise. The target countries included Barbados, Dominica and Antigua, with an exercise to be executed in St Lucia.
Stachys Noel, assistant manager, underwriting operations, SGI, who took part in the clean-up, said, “I must laud the efforts of the team that came out to support this initiative. Indiscriminate dumping is a major problem that negatively impacts all of us, and therefore cannot be left unchecked. I look forward to the day when beach clean-ups like this one are no longer required with such frequency.”
This project was initiated by the company in 2022, with team members collecting over 4,500 pounds of garbage and debris from beaches in four of its operating territories. That effort was supported by local conservation entities in each country, such as the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), who would have assisted with the sorting and weighing of the waste collected.
