Sagicor stalwart Gregory Whiby retires

October 04, 2022
After 45 years of dedicated service, Sagicor advisor Gregory Whiby has proceeded on full retirement.

Whiby joined the regional financial services and insurance giant when it was known as the Barbados Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1977 and retired from management in 2010 but continued as an advisor until August 2022.

Whiby moved quickly through the ranks becoming a unit supervisor in 1981; branch manager in 1984; assistant vice president, marketing in 1994; vice president, sales and marketing, as well as the deputy general manager in the Trinidad branch in 1998.

Whiby played a momentous role in directing the Trinidad sales management during his years at Sagicor. Jacinto Martinez, current vice president, sales, said, “With 45 years at Sagicor, Gregory has been an institution at the organisation. He is an affable gentleman who was a good leader to his team and always looked for ways to give back and guide advisors. He was an excellent producer and when he left management and returned to his roots, as it were, he didn’t miss a beat. It was as if no time had passed. He’s definitely earned the opportunity to relax and on behalf of Sagicor, I want to thank him for his contributions to the growth and success of the company and wish him all the best in this new phase of his life.”

Whiby was a prolific producer, winning many awards throughout his career, both within Sagicor and the wider insurance industry. These included Man of the Year (Sagicor) from 1988 to 1991 and Agent of the Year (overall industry) in 1991.
