Sagicor sponsors Junior Tennis Tournament

June 29, 2022

Port of Spain, Trinidad—Sagicor is pleased to announce its partnership with the Tennis Patrons Academy to manage the Sagicor Junior Tennis Tournament this year. The event is scheduled for July 9 – 14, from 9 am each day, at the Eddie Taylor Public Courts, Nelson Mandela Park, Port of Spain. There will be singles and doubles for boys and girls in the Under 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 21 categories, with Division I and Division II for newcomers in under 18, 14, 12 and 10.

This year’s event is a special one, as players from St Lucia and Barbados are expected to descend on the twin-island republic to compete. Sagicor’s sponsorship also coincides with its support of the larger Confederation of Tennis of Central America and the Caribbean (COTECC) Junior Tennis Tournament for under-14s in St Lucia on August 6 – 11, where players from Trinidad and Tobago will likewise be participating. COTECC is one of six regional tennis divisions worldwide that is affiliated with the International Tennis Federation. It is focused on developing tennis throughout the Caribbean and Central America.

Trinidadian Kale Dalla Costa is currently ranked sixth in the COTECC male under-14s and is expected to play in the T&T tournament.

Asha Nabbie, assistant vice president, marketing, for Sagicor Life Inc, said, “The pandemic would have halted the event and by extension, our sponsorship for the last two years. We are therefore pleased to be able to restart our support, with this year marking 18 years that Sagicor has been onboard. We’re very excited for our youths to be back out on the courts and for us to continue working with Tennis Patrons.”

The main event of the tournament also includes the Red Ball Under-10 Tournament which gives beginners who are interested in tennis and intermediate players who wish to further their skills, the opportunity to participate. This beginner event is scheduled for Sunday, July 10, at 8.30 am.

Tournament director Jean Merry said, “In 2019, the last time we had this tournament, we had over 85 players entering. For this upcoming session, we expect between 130 to 150 youths to enter and so sponsorship by Sagicor means a lot. The kids look forward to competing every year, and by playing in tournaments they will learn to compete and improve.”
