Sagicor sponsors health checks for Piparo Presbyterian

July 10, 2023
Regional insurer Sagicor collaborated with Central Medical Centre and Ferreira Optical to provide free vision screening and health checks for the 52 students of Piparo Presbyterian Primary School. This initiative was part of Sagicor’s Adopt-A-School programme, its Group corporate social responsibility project.

Sagicor’s president and CEO Robert Trestrail said, “Our work with Piparo Presbyterian as our adopted school for this year truly helps us live out our vision to be a great company committed to improving the lives of the people in the communities in which we operate. Our support focuses on the student holistically, as this approach leads to well-rounded members of society. We were pleased to be able to execute on the wellness aspect of the programme.”

Customer service manager at Ferreira Optical Camille Dingwell said, “It was our pleasure to partner with Sagicor’s Adopt-A-School initiative. Vision is more than seeing clearly or having 20/20 eyesight. It is also the ability to understand and respond to what is seen. Vision problems left uncorrected can cause behavioural and attention issues, interfere with learning, and impair your child’s development. We strongly recommend routine comprehensive eye examinations to ensure our society’s children have a better opportunity for healthy development and educational success. We commend what Sagicor is doing as a good corporate citizen and look forward to partnering and adding value to future initiatives.”

The team at Central Medical Centre was also pleased to partner with Sagicor on this community initiative. One of the doctors who provided support on the day, Dr Rameshdath Roop, a paediatrician with subspeciality in pediatric cardiology, said, “We at Central Medical recognise the importance of preventative care and health education in promoting lifelong wellness. So being able to provide general health checks, immunisation and dental health checks, screening examinations and clinical assessments was indeed a fulfilling and worthwhile endeavour to work with the students as we partnered with Sagicor to address the community health needs.”

The school principal was also quite appreciative. Principal Magdalene Ali said, “These health checks were much needed by the students. The vision screening highlighted areas that some parents need to manage and we as educators understand how that would have an impact on learning. Sagicor has truly been a partner for this academic year. The staff and students will not easily forget how they supported the community.”

Other initiatives included the paving of the school yard, a motivational and vision boarding session, as well as a book donation drive.

Sagicor’s Adopt-A-School programme is underpinned by four key pillars: physical environment, health, developmental and educational programmes and safety and will involve support in various forms including upgrades to the schools’ facilities, support of various school initiatives and overall outreach.

Schools were selected from several nominations submitted by Sagicor team members in each territory, with the final schools chosen by staff committees who conducted a period of review and shortlisting.
