Bridgetown, Barbados – Internships are valuable but there are also opportunities through volunteerism. This was the sound guidance given from Mrs. Marguerite Estwick, Executive Vice President, Human Resources, Sagicor Life Inc. to the students who attended the recently held Career and Life Management (CALM) Programme at The Pinelands Creative Workshop. 

Mrs. Estwick led a team from Sagicor Life Inc. to participate in the two-week programme, which began mid-June, targeted fourth and fifth form secondary school students as they prepare to transition into the world of work.

Under the theme Leadership and Influencing Change, Mrs. Estwick advised, “Students, while you should take advantage of internships where offered, there are opportunities to develop work related skills and competencies through voluntarism … join the youth arm of service clubs were ever possible. All education is valuable, because at this stage in many student’s lives it is not possible to predict where life will take you, and what elements of the education that you are now receiving will become critically useful in your normal day to day lives and what elements would drive your future careers.”  

Additionally, Siobhan Robinson-Morris, Manager, Human Resources, Sagicor Life Inc. in her presentation to the students gave them a bird’s eye view into the work world, focusing on preparation and practice.

She told the 25 students that, “Before any interview, be prepared. Look for typical questions that could be asked and do some research on the company, so you have a general knowledge of the policies, standards, expectations, and company culture. Also research the position you have applied for and any related tasks in preparedness for questions at the interview.” 

Robinson-Morris further counselled, “Your interview is your one shot at selling yourself, highlight good qualities and attributes, let them know that you believe you will make a positive impact on the interviewer and the organization, do not speak about irrelevant things …be focused and take time to think about what you are asked and answer to the best of your ability. Market yourself well.”

Other Sagicor team member Tremayne Austin, Sagicor Advisor, spent some time advising the students to plan for their futures now, noting that there is security if they plan right: “You can reduce the risks you face by planning for the unexpected and insurance such as what we offer at Sagicor covers much of that, however it’s not too early for you to start thinking about securing other things in life and you can do that by choosing a job that has good work-life balance and allowance to plan ahead.”
