More than 300 university students have benefitted from this year’s Summer Mentorship Programme by Sagicor Group Jamaica, which aimed to engage the country’s future leaders in valuable work experience relevant to their course of study and cultivate effective leadership capabilities.

The program, which ran from May through to August, immersed three batches of students into the Sagicor culture for a period of five weeks. The students were assigned to work areas in line with their course of study, with a view to fostering greater understanding of their prospective career fields and gain exposure to the corporate working environment.

Karl Williams, Senior Vice President of Group Human Resources and Corporate Sales and Services conveyed that the initiative is geared at helping tertiary students gain positive experience that will bolster their growth and development. “The Sagicor Summer Mentorship Programme helps these students to gain valuable work experience. But beyond that, it is about helping to refine their professional and interpersonal skills which will aid their career advancement.”

“At Sagicor, we believe in playing our part in contributing to positive development of young people. We foster a very engaging and client-centric environment for our team-members and its beneficial to the interns to learn from that experience,” Williams added.

The interns who participated in the programme have described the experience as having provided them with invaluable lessons and meaningful relationships. Savanna Witter, one of the participants in the program, who was assigned to the Employee Benefits Division of Sagicor Life Jamaica, said “This internship has been very meaningful to me and is helping me to grow and better understand what I want to do in my career and with my future. It has been a wonderful experience working with this team. I really hope I get to be part of the program again next year.”
