Bridgetown, Barbados— In an effort to continue to raise awareness around the importance of preparedness throughout the hurricane season, Sagicor General Insurance Inc recently created a social media competition called “What’s in your Go Bag?” Members of the public were invited to share their hurricane preparedness plan, as well as the contents of their “Go Bags.” Go bags contain items from checklists recommended by disaster preparedness organisations to be kept on hand in case of emergency evacuation during a hurricane.

The competition ran over the course of three weeks during the month of September across the insurer’s regional operations and offered persons the chance to win a generator valued at US$1,000. Janelle Marshall emerged as the grand prize winner for Barbados.

The submissions were judged based on the necessary items required in case of evacuation, important documents and items needed for seamless recovery and resumption of life post-disaster as well as the overall practicality of the bag relative to weight and portability.

Sagicor General’s Chief Financial Officer, Patrick Hinkson, who was on hand for the presentation said “Sagicor General continues to encourage clients and the general public to be prepared for any eventuality outside and during the hurricane season which is still with us. An emergency go-bag helps in the event one has to evacuate their home in a rush. This bag should contain nonperishable food items, important documents, flashlight, batteries, first aid materials, water and important contact information.” He continued: “As we move into the last month of the hurricane season, let us be conscious that we are all exposed and the preventative actions that we take now, will redound to our benefit in the event the unfortunate should occur.”
