Sagicor Foundation to offer 60 tertiary grants in honour of Jamaica 60

August 08, 2022

Kingston, Jamaica: 60 tertiary students are set to benefit from a share of over 3 million dollars from the Sagicor Foundation as the charitable organization rolls out its Jamaica 60 grants. These additional grants are an extension of the Foundation’s Scholarship Programme where 25 students will also receive financial assistance at the tertiary level valued at up to $300,000.

Each Jamaica 60 grant beneficiary will be selected from the current pool of Sagicor Foundation Scholarship Programme applicants and will receive $60,000 to assist with their tertiary education needs.

Alysia White, executive director for the Sagicor Foundation, explained that while awarding grants through the Foundation is not a new feat, the charitable arm of Sagicor Group Jamaica wanted to do something different this year. “Jamaica turns sixty on the sixth of August and so we decided that awarding sixty grants in addition to our 25 scholarship recipients was a good way to honour the occasion,” said White.

“This approach not only aligns with one of the Foundation’s pillars of education, but most importantly, 60 aspiring nation builders with get the financial assistance they need. Investing in the country’s education is not something we ever shy away from so we are very happy to support these bright minds,” she continued.

In 2021, over 39 tertiary students pursuing their first degree at the University of the West Indies, Mona, University of Technology, Jamaica; Northern Caribbean University, Caribbean Maritime University, Mico University College, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, and the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean were awarded new scholarships.

“We wanted to ensure we selected the right individuals and so, while shortlisting students for the main scholarship, we will use that same pool to select grant awardees. Tertiary students have a lot of expenses to take into consideration when studying, we are pleased to be able to assist,” shared White.

Application period for the 2022 Sagicor Foundation Scholarship Programme closed on June 13.
