Sagicor encourages self-love for Valentine’s Day, hosts virtual session for its adopted school
February 25, 2022
Regional insurer Sagicor has a robust corporate social responsibility programme borne out of its vision. One such programme is its Adopt-A-School initiative, where the company adopted several primary schools across its Caribbean operations. In Trinidad and Tobago, for academic year 2021/2022, Sagicor adopted the Mundo Nuevo RC School in Talparo.
With February being the month of love, Sagicor recognised the importance of supporting and guiding students on the value of self-love. The organisation partnered with motivational speaker Arnold Best, owner of Arrowhead Strategic Intervention Services, to record a short motivational session to provide the students with practical ways for finding motivation and validation.
During his virtual presentation, Best told the students, “Understanding who you are, loving yourself, allows you in the future to love others. The concept of self-love starts with your belief. Sometimes we believe we’re not smart enough or good enough or we won’t be loved. That is a lie.” Best also urged the students to be kind to themselves and allow themselves to be who they are.
Best was passionate about this project, saying that none of us should ever underestimate the impact of the people who care for us to move us forward. He said, “Your life is a direct reflection of the expectations of those you surround yourself with. It’s important for all of us to step out of our comfort zone and find people who aren’t ready to settle for mediocrity and who want more for us because you can’t help but become more like the people you surround yourself with. To practice self-love, you must believe in yourself, your abilities, and worth, you must first discover and accept who you really are. It is essential to your own happiness.”
Keisha Humphrey-Mayers, Sagicor manager, communications and Group CSR, said, “Our Adopt-a-School programme has given us a great opportunity to impact the lives of some of our nation’s young charges. Valentine’s Day is traditionally about loving others but one of the greatest ways we can express love is to ourselves. We’re glad that Arnold was able to share such a timely message with the students and we hope that it makes a difference in the way they view themselves.”
The Adopt-A-School programme, which was launched in 2021, is underpinned by four key pillars: physical environment, health, developmental and educational programmes and safety and has seen Sagicor support the school through upgrades to the school’s facilities as well as overall outreach.
