Jevaughn Gordon – A Sagicor Foundation scholar on a mission

Sagicor Foundation tertiary education scholar Jevaughn Gordon’s top tip for prospective scholars is to be authentic.
“Be yourself,” he advises. “Also, be proactive and start writing and editing your personal essay beforehand, so when the scholarships open you are able to submit right away. Don’t exaggerate, and don’t let anyone write your essay but you.”
Gordon is now in the final year of his Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communication and International Relations degree at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus. He was awarded a renewable Sagicor Foundation Scholarship in 2019.
At the time, Gordon, a sixth former at St Jago High School, was grieving the tragic loss of his mother, and unsure whether he would have a shot at tertiary education.
“My tertiary education was now rested solely on the shoulders of my father, and as such I had to seek scholarships to pursue higher studies. Most people recommend that I apply for the Sagicor Scholarship. I then went to social media and found all the information I needed.”
Gordon shared that Sagicor’s Scholarship programme did more for him than assist with university expenses each year; it changed his life.
“What I love most about being a Sagicor Scholar is that in addition to funding our tuition, they also ensure our holistic development by having training and motivational sessions and other activities with us,” the scholar shared. “These instill skills such as leadership, volunteerism, public speaking and awareness, share student employment opportunities with us, and inspire us to attain higher academic achievement.”
Currently working as a Production Assistant at the RJR/Gleaner Communications Group on the award-winning programmes Beyond the Headlines and All Angles with Dionne Jackson Miller, Jevaughn is on a mission to work in the field of media, government and communications.
He encouraged scholarship seekers to apply for Sagicor’s Scholarship Porgramme, and left them with this word of advice:
“Be prepared for your interviews. Do not underestimate the interviews, as they can make-or-break decision for you to receive any scholarship. Research the companies and speak to past scholarship recipients for past interview questions and how to effectively navigate the process.”
